Youth
Kung Fu
The
Martial Arts have a tremendously creative potential for teaching
young people to resolve conflict peacefully and create fine moral
character. To meet today's urgent personal and social challenges
of increased violence and the deterioration of ethical values, we
need a different education beyond the teaching of academics, one
that can teach our children the skills to resolve conflict and build
character. Martial Arts for Youth Program can be this education
for peace and social understanting.
Martial
Arts training help children overcome bullies, conflict and a lack
of self-confidence. Learning physical self-defense techniques gives
students the confidence to defend themselves after a fight has broken
out, yet the intention of martial arts practice is to stop and altercation
before it becomes one. It is therefore essential that youngsters
are also taught the mental aspects of the martial arts, so they
understand how to resolve conflict by other than physical means.
The Youth Kung Fu Program follows the same basic
curriculum as our adult Jow Ga Kung Fu classes, modified slightly
to meet the needs of children ages 8-12.
Just
like in the adult classes, training in the Youth Class is broken into
four major areas:
•
Exercise
•
Forms (Empty Hand & Weapon)
• Self
Defense
•
Sparring |

Exercise
In
today's world of television and video games, it continually gets
harder and harder to motivate children to spend their leisure time
doing any sort of physical activity away from the computer or TV,
which is reflected in the high rate of child obesity we face in
this country.
Training
in Kung Fu provides a great physical activity that can help improve
not only your child's physical health, but their mental health as
well. Every class starts with a warm up and stretching to help promote
flexibility and strength. In addition, Kung Fu also helps develop
speed, stamina and coordination.
In
addition to the physical benefits, kung fu can teach the virtues
of compassion, love, wisdom and respect, and the fine qualities
that build a strong and honorable character in young people so that
they may contribute to creating a more peaceful and gentler world. |
Forms
(Empty Hand &
Weapons)
A
form is a collection of techniques which are choreographed in a
specific pattern or order. Each form your child learns teaches them
different techniques, fighting theories and principles, and provides
them with a means to practice technique, footwork, which when done
correctly, provides an excellent cardio workout.
Self
Defense
Another aspect of your son or daughter's
training is their learning how to use all these martial arts techniques
to protect themselves, to learn when and when not
to use techniques and what is appropriate. In addition to age appropriate
techniques, members of the Youth Class also learn skills such as
how to deal with bullies, how to deal with peer pressure and anti-abduction
skills.
Sparring
Once
a week members of the Youth Intermediate and Advance class get the
opportunity to participate in Light Contact Sparring with their
classmates. Sparring gives students the chance to practice some
of their techniques in a safe, controlled environment with their
classmates. Sparring only takes place under the supervision of a
qualified Instructor.. SAFETY EQUIPMENT IS MANDATORY WHEN SPARRING. |
